That's a great question..!!
Motivation is a very personal thing, with each of us having different types of motivators. For me,
I need to feel that I am growing and developing; if I find I am in a role where I don't feel like I'm being stretched or challenged, I will pro-actively engage with my line manager and others across the organisation to seek out new challenges and opportunities that could provide me with those new challenges that help me grow. One of the great concepts we are just getting off the ground here at First Central is the concept of our Career Hub and the opportunity to work on career 'gigs', effectively short term assignments/initiatives where colleagues can volunteer to spend time on a particular gig that will be centred around both using their skills, but also the opportunity to develop new skills. For me personally, I carry out a 6th monthly personal review where I ask myself whether the role I am doing is balancing everything I want from life, including whether it is supporting my growth. If have previously been in roles 'too long' and this is a tool I now use to ensure that doesn't happen again
I also need to see that I am making a difference, so I look for, on a monthly basis, those 'wins' that I have either achieved myself, or my team have achieved supported by my leadership - if the win's dry up, again, it's probably a sign that I need to do something about it.
Finally, part of my motivation is through recognition; I like to be told that I am doing a good job (and if i'm not!!), and again at First Central we have some fabulous colleague recognition schemes that mean it's so easy to say simple thank you's to colleagues for a great job well done.
Hope that helps :)
